Starting Cattle on High Levels of Sweet Bran in Southern Plains Feedlots
نویسندگان
چکیده
Three hundred fifteen crossbred steers (732 ± 9 lb) were used to determine the effects of feeding high levels of Sweet Bran ® during the grain adaptation period on steer performance and carcass characteristics compared with steers fed a steam-flaked corn and alfalfa-based adaptation diet containing 20% Sweet Bran. A traditional step-up procedure was compared to four strategies which utilized Sweet Bran. As steers were adapted to a common finishing diet, the level of Sweet Bran was decreased as level of SFC was increased. Feeding a high level of Sweet Bran with either alfalfa hay or an optimal level of cottonseed hulls resulted in animal performance equal to or better than the traditional step-up procedure. Feeding Sweet Bran with alfalfa hay resulted in a 17lb increase in HCW compared with the Control. Feeding a high level of Sweet Bran improved marbling score and resulted in significant reductions in the total amount of roughage required to finish a feedlot steer.

Starting Yearlings with Ramp in Southern Plains Feedlots
Three hundred six crossbred steers (703 ± 1 lb) were used to determine effects of adapting steers to a finishing diet using RAMP for 14 to 30 d on steer performance and carcass characteristics. RAMP treatments were compared to a traditional step-up procedure (CON) utilizing an initial concentration (DM-basis) of 32.5% steam-flaked corn (SFC), 45% alfalfa hay (ALF), 20% Sweet Bran, and 2.5% supp...
متن کاملNutritional methods to decrease N losses from open-dirt feedlots in Nebraska.
Nitrogen (N) losses from cattle feedlots are of concern due to loss of valuable N and enrichment of the atmospheric N pool. Nutritional methods to decrease such losses would have economic and environmental benefits. One method to decrease N losses is by increasing carbon (C) on the pen surface. The most cost effective method of decreasing N losses with C may be feeding diets lower in digestibil...
متن کاملRight‐Sided Congestive Heart Failure in North American Feedlot Cattle
BACKGROUND Anecdotal reports suggest the incidence of right-sided congestive heart failure (RHF) in feedlot cattle is increasing; however, the rate of occurrence and risk factors are largely unknown. OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were to evaluate the risk of RHF over time and among feedlots, to characterize some of the risk factors for RHF, and to investigate how risk factors may affec...

This study was an attempt to devise productive orientations of cattle herds in eastern high plains of Algeria. In this regard, 165 farms randomly identified were investigated. The selection of breeders was based to existence of cattle on the farm, and the farmer proposed to investigation must have at least two cows. The approach taken was to identify all systems adopted by farmers in a region t...
متن کاملAcidosis in Feedlot Cattle: Practical Observations 1
Acidosis in cattle is caused by excessive ingestion of feeds which are rich in readily available carbohydrates. Thus, factors which contribute to excessive ingestion of high energy diets are predisposing to acidosis. Many of the conditions which prevail in cattle feedlots contribute to variable feed intake by catt le and subsequently to acidosis. A multi tude of management factors are involved ...
